Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (May 31, 2017) – Tommy Bryant fought mechanical problems last weekend as he competed in the 15th annual Memorial Day Classic with the ASCS Gulf South Region.

Bryant and the SawBlade.com backed Cooper Motorsports started the weekend on Friday at RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas, where they placed fifth in a heat race.

“We fought some sort of rear end trouble all weekend,” he said. “I don’t know if we have a brake issue or something in the rear end. We ran a ton more gear than everyone else and still couldn’t get any RPMs in the motor. It felt like we were dragging an anchor. Then we developed a valve cover leak. It seemed everything on the race car that had fluid in it leaked this weekend.”

Bryant drove from sixth to a third-place finish in the B Main before he charged from 17th to an eighth-place result in the main event.

“It was a slick track and the small size meant you had to run the top,” he said. “I tried a slider on the leader in the B and lost a spot. It was just very hard to pass. We were so far behind the eight ball from the heat, but we were able to make some good speed in the A Main.”

On Saturday Bryant opted to change the front axle of the Cooper Motorsports entry before taking on the competition at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.

“The car was better, but we were still not turning the RPMs like we should,” he said. “The motor was just lugging off the corners. We ran well in the B Main, but in the feature we developed that oil leak in the engine again. And the rear end got so hot it was burning my back side. I was having to try and lift myself off the seat during cautions.”

Bryant salvaged a 15th-place finish in the main event after placing fourth in a heat race and winning a B Main.

Sunday’s event at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, rained out.

“We are going to take a couple of weeks off and strip the car down and start over,” he said. “I’m going to tear the rear end apart and see what’s going on. There was just no forward drive in the car. We went from being a top-three car and contending for wins to running mid-pack this past weekend and it’s very frustrating. We are going to focus on getting the car revamped. There were just too many things that got away from us this past weekend.”

He is scheduled to return to action June 16 at Bronco Motor Speedway in Cleveland, Texas, and June 17 at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas, with the ASCS Gulf South Region. Despite the difficulties last weekend Bryant remains fifth in the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings.
